Buckskin Clothing of Samuel Whitney, “Peg Leg” Sam

The leather buckskins belonged to Samuel Whitney who came to Utah in 1847, later settling in Millville and Clarkston. Sam spoke seven languages and interpreted for the Shoshone who called him “Burrowit,” One-armed Boy. He worked as a freighter, herded cattle, broke horses, farmed, carried mail from Cache Valley to Brigham City by horseback, cut lumber, and was an excellent rifleman.

He lost his left arm just above the elbow in a thresher at age fifteen, and at fifty he suffered a compound fracture below his right knee that led to the amputation of his leg. Using his arm stump and peg leg Samuel lived a full and faithful life to the age of 83. He fathered ten children with Fanny Wall and two children with Polly Campbell.

Douglass Piano

William Mochrie Douglass built a two-story store at 100 S. Main Street, Smithfield, in 1883 just around the corner from his home. It became known as the “Rock Store” and the upper floor, accessed by a narrow staircase, served as the town’s social center for many years. The popular dances had music provided by an orchestra or band and this piano. The Douglass family transported the piano from their home to the store on many occasions. It was hoisted with ropes through the second story windows then returned to their home after the event.

George W. Thatcher Sleigh and Joseph Smith, Jr. Sleigh Bells

The Studebaker brand sleigh is classified as a cutter. The Albany model cutter has a goose-neck dash that protected passengers from snow kicked up by the horses. Cutters offered a cozy ride where occupants could sit close together. George W. Thatcher owned the sleigh that was donated by his son, George W. Thatcher, Jr.

Joseph Smith, Jr. originally owned the sleigh bells draped on the cutter. After his death, Porter Rockwell obtained the bells and gave them to George W. Lufkin, his step brother-in-law by plural marriage. Jane Lufkin Hailstone donated the sleigh bells.

Logan Temple Ox

Workers from the United Order Foundry of Logan made the cast iron ox, painted gold, for the baptistry when the Logan Temple was dedicated in 1884. The twelve oxen around the font represent the twelve tribes of Israel from the Old Testament. Alexander McQueen created the mold to look like the curly haired oxen in his native Scotland. Carl Lundberg and Joseph Wilson both worked at the foundry building the baptismal font and casting the oxen. In 1976 all of the oxen were sent to Salt Lake City for storage but this ox returned to Logan in 1984 to celebrate the bicentennial of the temple’s dedication, then became part of the museum’s permanent collection.

Nauvoo Drum

The Nauvoo Legion, formed in Illinois, used this drum until the revocation of the Nauvoo Charter in 1844. Isaac Odekirk, the bass drummer, brought it to Northern Utah where it was used by bands in Weber and Cache County. Mr. Odekirk abandoned the drum in Garden City when he moved to Vernal. It found new life after being rescued and restored for use by the Hyrum Silver Gray Band during the 1924 Cache Centennial Celebration. After many years of use the antique drum made its way into the Daughters of Utah Pioneers museum collection.
